What is The KayLeo Project?

The KayLeo Project is a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit corporation formed by professional designers and writers to provide Graphic Design, Web Design, Website Optimization, Content Development and Organic SEO services exclusively to the nonprofit sector. 

Each client’s need is a project, whether it is a single design or a full scale Brand campaign. We partner with our clients to prepare a strategic, goal focused project plan with sustainable solutions. Are your services free?

All products and services are based upon a predetermined sliding scale cost table. Under certain conditions and at the availability of our designers, services are offered at extremely low or no cost to qualifying nonprofits.

What is a qualifying nonprofit?

A qualifying Nonprofit (NPO) or Not-for-Profit (NFPO) organization must meet the following requirements, or be approved by an officer:

  • be registered as a nonprofit at the State level,
  • or, be part of a nonprofit cooperative that is registered at the State level
  • or, be able to demonstrate 12 consecutive months of operation as a nonprofit entity as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of State and International Revenue Service (IRS); this may include unincorporated associations such as individuals or groups working towards a charitable purpose
  • and meet the requirements of our Inclusion Policy

What can I expect?

Every client need is assessed and used to develop a custom project plan with a specific scope, set duration, tasks and objectives. Our team will work with you to understand your voice, your vision, your mission and your purpose. Dependent upon your product or service, we stay in close contact to ensure we are accurately representing your Brand Identity, and share pertinent feedback or data. We build sustainability into all of our projects.

What happens after the project?

We will continue to provide WordPress support as needed. For websites, if we did our job – you’ll have all the tools you need to be self sufficient. For Graphic Design work, we provide continued support as specified in your terms and conditions.

How much does it cost to build a website?

That depends on your technical know-how, who you host with, what bells and whistles you want, and who builds your site. Commercially, you can expect $3000 for a company to build you a simple site with a minimum of $1500-$2500 for ongoing SEO & management. Do your homework, and you can find a reputable WordPress Guru for far less. Or, do it yourself and only pay for the hosting services and addons that you want. The WordPress community has a wealth of resources to help you get started.

How do I make my website faster?

Wow – that’s a bloated question! There are many, many, many very simple to complex causes for a slow site. Try out the following tools that will identify the top contributing issues, and provide guidance on how to make corrections: GTMetrix, Pingdom, & PageSpeed Insights. Once get the hang of it, try out Google Chrome’s Developer Tools by hitting Control + Shift + I – or click on the three vertical dots on the upper right hand side of your browser, then More Tools.

How do I get my website to show up in the search results?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a lot of hard work when done the right way. Your site’s placement within Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) is based upon many factors such as site speed, domain authority, and content. Search Engines like Google & Bing want their users to find quality, relevant content. They penalize sites that use unethical or bad practices to “spam” a site with keywords to drive traffic – whether relevant or not – to a site. They also penalize sluggish sites, sites that are not mobile ready / friendly, 

When you’re ready to get into SEO, be very careful when selecting an SEO firm. Prices for commercial SEO services range from $399 – $2500 per month or more. Not all abide ethical SEO practices, and there is a lot you can do for your site without those professional services. Google also offers many great & free tools, such as Google Analytics, that help you understand who is visiting your page, what they are interested in, and how long they viewed your site. WordPress also has a terrific plugin, Google Site Kit. Make sure you run the site performance tools to ensure your site’s code is optimized.

I need to build a website. Can't I just use SquareSpace, Wix, or built-in WordPress Themes?

Absolutely – if you have the budget, do it! Premium website builders / hosting platforms such as SquareSpace and Wix have easy, quick, user friendly and efficient tools to get a website up fast. Building a website is not difficult – however, as content is added, sites can become bloated. Unused Javascript and CSS will also hurt page loading, which negatively impacts a site’s Search Engine ranking. Make sure you read their recommended best practices to keep your site fast and efficient for an optimal user experience.
